John Mawurndjul

John Mawurndjul is a well- known Kunwinjku artist from Maningrida in Western Arnhem Land. He was taught to paint by his brother Jimmy Njiminjuma and his uncle Peter Marralwanga. John Mawurndjul creates works of considerable ceremonial importance. His style is characterised by fine regular bands of multi-coloured cross-hatching applied to the figurative forms with a fine cross-hatching technique to create a shimmering effect.

John Mawurndjul had a major solo retrospective exhibition at the Museum Tinguely in Basel, Switzerland and his work is included in the Musée du quai Branly, Paris, as well as major international and national art institutions.
