Painted Coolamon, 2008
A coolamon is an Australian Aboriginal, multi-purpose carrying bowl made of hand-carved wood. Traditionally, coolamons were used by women to carry water and bush foods as well as a cradle to rock babies. Coolamons were carried on the head supported by a human hair ring pad.
Modern coolamons are painted or decorated with individual Aboriginal dreaming totem designs, owned by each artist. Each coolamon is a unique artefact, hand carved and hand painted.
